There was a moment after I spoke, when the shock and silence that met me appeared to stretch endlessly. I saw my words being carried away and tried reaching out to drag them back into me where they would be safe again. But the current was too strong and my hands too weak. So I watched a little defiantly, as they settled uneasily in the faces of those that surrounded me.
